Verkhnedvinsk. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

The first church in Drissa (the historical name of Verkhnedvinsk) was built of wood in 1734, but became too small after 1777, when the city received the status of a district. This necessitated the construction of a new, more spacious Catholic church.

In 1809, a new stone church was built, which was repaired and rebuilt several times, including restoration after a fire in 1899. Nevertheless, in 1917, the church and the parish building were looted and partially destroyed, and then used as shops.

In the 1990s, the building was returned to the church, it was restored, and after a major restoration, it was restored to its former appearance.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary has three naves, a triangular apse and a gable roof. Its outline is a hexagon. The interior is covered with a cylindrical vault on arches, and the naves are separated by an arcade on pillars. Three altars, including the main one, are decorated with architectural elements, among which a Doric four-column portico is visible. A five-tiered tent tower is located above the main entrance to the church.

With a history full of events and restoration work, this church is not only an architectural monument, but also a place where time, history and religious life are intertwined. The temple today is a symbol of overcoming difficulties and majestic restoration. Its architectural beauty and interior decor, which combine elements of the past with modern ones, attract the attention of both locals and travelers from all over the world.
