The Church of St. Nicholas in Verkhnedvinsk is a monument of classical architecture of the early 19th century.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Verkhnedvinsk is considered a monument of architectural classicism, which was widespread in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Belarus, this style was developed due to manor construction and urban development changes. The craftsmen naturally used classical elements in the design of religious buildings, and the Church of St. Nicholas, built in 1819, is no exception. Clear lines, strict forms, restrained decoration and symmetry are the basic principles of classicism that are present in the architecture of this temple.
St. Nicholas Church was recognized as a cathedral in 1895, which emphasized its importance in the religious life of the local community.
It is a rectangular brick building with a hemispherical dome and arched windows decorated with a jagged cornice. The temple also has a three-tiered bell tower with a hipped roof. The interior design is restrained, and previously the walls were ornately painted. Today, the church houses three unique and exquisite icons from the 18th and 19th centuries.
St. Nicholas Church has a rich historical experience. In the period after the October Revolution, she faced difficulties: church valuables were seized, and the temple was closed more than once. Nevertheless, during the Great Patriotic War, the church served as a shelter for parishioners, although it was closed again after the war.
In 2004, in honor of the 185th anniversary of the church, a 7-pound bell was cast at the expense of parishioners.
Today, St. Nicholas Church continues to attract tourists with its unique architecture and historical significance, remaining an important part of Verkhnedvinsk's cultural heritage.
In addition, in this city it is worth paying attention to the catolic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary of the 19th century. The local bridge over the Western Dvina is one of the highest in the country.
