The Church of St. Nicholas in Zhelezniki reflects the rich history of the region.
The village of Zhelezniki has been known since the 16th century and is mentioned in the inventory of the Chechen village Council in 1704 as a boyar settlement with 15 houses. This explains the absence of temples for a long time, as the population was small.
It was only at the end of the 18th century that a church in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built in the village. The construction of the stone church began thanks to the Korotkevich brothers, natives of these places, who allocated funds for this project in 1896.
The church was opened in 1900 and has become an important center for local parishioners.
However, the church was closed in the 1920s and 1930s. Local residents saved some of the icons by taking them home, but many church valuables, including jewelry, utensils and books, were seized. The bells and domes were dropped and destroyed, and the church building was used as a grain storage and storage for fertilizers. As a result, the interior frescoes and murals were irretrievably lost, and the church was abandoned.
The situation changed in 2004, when restoration work began in the church.
In May 2006, the grand opening of the restored St. Nicholas Church took place, which became an important event for the local community and the revival of spiritual life in the village.
The church houses the relics of St. Panteleimon, the great martyr and healer. People turn to him with prayers for recovery and he responds to these requests. The Iron Books tell about the miracles that happen thanks to his help. On August 9, the Orthodox Church celebrates the feast day in honor of St. Panteleimon and a solemn service is held in the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Zhelezniki.
Today, St. Nicholas Church is not only an architectural monument, but also a symbol of the revival and preservation of the cultural heritage of the region. It reflects the rich history of the region.
