Volkovysk. Swedish Mountain.

The ancient city of Volkovysk has several archaeological sites. If you are in this city and want to see the panorama of the historical center, then you should come and climb to the top of the Swedish mountain.

There is a legend that this Swedish mountain was filled by the Swedes during the war and a major Swedish military leader is buried here.

The mountain has an interesting truncated cone shape. The height of the Swedish mountain reaches 32 meters. It was here that detinets was located in the 10th – 13th centuries - from here the ancient Volkovysk began.

There is a defensive rampart around the circular area on the mountain. There is a castle adjacent to the mountain on the west side.

Archaeological excavations were carried out here during the time of the Polish state in 1925. During the Soviet period, excavations were carried out in 1954.

Numerous unique items were found: battle axes, arrowheads and spears, spurs, stirrups and sword parts. A large collection of jewelry was unveiled here: glass and bronze bracelets, rings, pieces of silver, amber, lead and copper. A bone figure of a rook was found in the cultural layer of the 12th century, as well as a unique find – a figurine of a drummer warrior. A carved medallion was found on which the inscription "Dmitry" is a breast image of a warrior with a shield in chain mail and helmet. According to the finds, historians determined that the court of a large feudal lord was located on the Swedish mountain and it was here that the Volkovysk prince had his residence.

Many of the finds on the mountain can be seen in the regional museum of local lore.
