Mstislavl. Castle Hill.

During your journey through the historical center of Mstislavl, the paths will definitely lead you to the Castle Hill, where life once swirled, and now there is a museum and a site for jousting tournaments. The castle in the city was built during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and has survived more than one siege. It was here that the administrative center of the medieval state - the Principality of Mstislavl was located. Prince Semyon Lugvenii lived on the castle hill. It was he who led the Mstislavl banner during the Battle of Grunwald, as the memorial stone installed at the foot of Castle Hill tells us. The castle was made of wood with several towers. The castle itself had a dungeon tower, farm buildings and residential buildings. Several meters of the cultural layer have survived to our time. Archaeologists have been exploring Castle Hill since ancient times: Yevdokim Romanov, Alexander Levdansky, Sergei Dubinsky, Mikhas Tkachev, Leonid Alekseev and others. In recent years, a unique exposition has been created. During the excavations, several layers of the wooden bridge of the 12th-14th centuries were discovered. And all these fragments of the ancient wooden city have been preserved and are now open to tourists. The tower - dungeon, which houses the ethnographic collection, has also been restored. Every year in August in Mstislavl there is an international knight festival in which many knight clubs take part. A fair is held during the festival.
