Lichitsy. The ancient cemetery.
In the Volkovysk district, just north of the district center, there is a place called Lichitsy. The place has been known since the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since the 17th century. In 1642, a church belonging to the Orthodox, or Uniates, was mentioned here. In 1796, the village belonged to the marshals of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Zygmunt Grabowski.
During the time of the Russian Empire, a new stone church was built near the ancient wooden church in 1871. The new church was consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A bell tower has been erected above the church. A stone fence has been built around the building. At the beginning of the 20th century, the old church was dismantled and moved to a local cemetery. The temple was used as a cemetery chapel. This wooden church housed a 19th-century Gospel, which was presented by Empress Maria Alexandrovna of the Russian Empire. The holy Book with the construction of the stone church was transferred to the new temple.
At the end of the 19th century, five parish schools and a public school were assigned to the Novaya Church. Since 1897, a women's parish school has been opened. The parish consisted of 1,147 women and 1,162 men. After the Great Patriotic War, the temple was closed and a warehouse was built here. In 1997, the stone church was consecrated.
The cemetery of soldiers from the First World War has been preserved in the village to this day. There are also several stone outbuildings from the former manor.
The remains of the Holy Trinity Church and the Grabovsky stone chapel are located in the local cemetery. The wooden Trinity Church was built in the 17th – 18th centuries and used to be in the village itself. Now the temple is abandoned and in disrepair.
Here at the cemetery there is a stone 19th century tetrahedral tomb-chapel of Grabovsky family in the form of a pillar. There is a metal memorial plaque on the chapel. Countess Grabovskaya, who was originally from Pototski family, is buried here. She died in 1818 at the age of 62.
