Mstibovo. Gorodishche, or Castle Hill.
In the Volkovysk district there is a place called Mstibovo, which has preserved Castle Hill and a stone Catholic church. Castle Hill, or the hillfort, dates back to the period of the Middle Ages of the 12th - 18th centuries. It is located 500 meters west of the town on the right bank of the Netupa River.
The castle is low, about one meter high, and has a circular area with a diameter of 30 meters. An earthen rampart with a height of five meters is built around the perimeter. Behind the rampart is a defensive moat and a swampy area. The monument was explored by archaeologists: in 1974 by Ya. Zverugo, then in 1988-1989 S. Pivovarchik and other researchers. Many ceramic products have been found. Ceramics from the 16th and 17th centuries account for about 90% of the finds. According to archaeologist P. Rapoport, this settlement is the remains of the Volyn boyar Mstibog's possession, about whom it is written in the Ipatiev chronicle.
The first buildings on the settlement were erected in the 12th – 13th centuries. During the 15th century, Grand Duke Kazimir gave the courtyard and the town of Mstibog to Jan Kezgailo, the headman of Zhemoytia.
In 1492, Mstibovo was mentioned in the documents already under the modern name.
During the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the castle was built in the 15th - 17th centuries. The castle was used as a defensive structure until the 18th century.
