Description

For some time there was a popular religious trend among magnates and gentry in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – Calvinism. The magnates built the corresponding temples, which are called the Calvinist sbor. In Belarus, only a few stone temples of this type have remained until our time, these are in Zaslavl, Smorgon and in several other places. One of these Calvinist churches was built in the 18th century in Izabelin village in Grodno region in the Baroque style. It was consecrated to catholic church only in the 20th century. After the restoration, the church is in operation.

Izabelin. The Church of Peter and Paul.

The first church in a place with the beautiful name of Izabelin was mentioned in 1669. In 1778, the owner of Izabelin, Count Jan Jerzy Grabowski, founded a Calvinist sbor here. Calvinism, as a branch of Protestantism, arose in the 16th century. The name of this Christian movement comes from its ideologist, the French theologian Jean Calvin. Calvinism was very popular at one time among the nobility and especially the magnates of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Izabelin even had the residence of a Calvinist bishop and it was here that the synods of Calvinists from all over Lithuania were held.

The Catholic church has been mentioned in documents in Izabelin since 1934, when a new church was built at the expense of the parish. The new church burned down at the very beginning of the war in June 1941, and then Catholics began to gather for prayers in the building of the Calvinist sbor. The Calvinists converted to Catholicism, and the former Calvinist church became considered a Roman Catholic Church.

After the Great Patriotic War, the local priest was arrested and exiled for several years. After his release, he returned to Izabelin and continued his work at the church until his death.

Once there was a fire in the church and the monument was badly damaged. The building stood in ruins before the collapse of the USSR. In 1989, the ruins were handed over to Catholic believers and restoration work began. The church was opened in 1992 and Bishop Alexander Kashkevich from Grodno consecrated it in honor of Saints Peter and Paul.

The church building was built in the Baroque style and consists of a rectangular volume in terms of which a semicircular apse is attached. The building is covered with a gable roof. A bell tower has been built above the entrance. The facade is almost devoid of decoration, which is typical for the architecture of the Calvinist sbor of that time. The interior is single-nave. There are choirs above the entrance.
