Volkovysk. St. Nicholas Church
The Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas is located in the historical center of the city of Volkovysk. The monument was built in the style of late classicism with elements of the Russian style.
The brick stone temple was built during the time of the Russian Empire in 1874. The monument was designed by architects Vlasov and Guryev.
In 1919, during the Polish state, the church was taken over by a Catholic garrison church. During the Great Patriotic War, the building was adapted as an army barracks. Wooden multi-tiered burrows were installed in the room. Then there was a military depot. Then the church was returned to the Orthodox faithful, and the temple operated continuously during Soviet times. During the period of independence of the Republic of Belarus, the building was included in the list of historical and cultural values.
The monument consists of three main architectural parts: a vestibule, a prayer hall and an apse. An eight-by-four bell tower is built over the vestibule. The main entrance to the temple is marked by a keel-shaped pediment. A rectangular apse is attached to the octagonal main volume.
The interior has a rectangular shape. There is a wooden two-tiered iconostasis, which is decorated with gilding and carvings. In recent years, the monument has been renovated.
