Chapel for those killed in the battle with Napoleon in 1812 near Gorodechno.
The Battle of Gorodechno took place on July 31 (August 12, old style) 1812 on the Gorodechnenka River near the villages of Gorodechno, Poddubno, Kharki, Libiya, Koziy Brod, Kletnoye, Shereshevo of today's Pruzhany District. At that time, these lands belonged to the Kobrin District.
The battle was very large-scale and brutal. About 60 thousand soldiers and officers took part in the battle. The Russian army was able to win it, despite significant losses of its army, which amounted to about 1,500 soldiers, and the superiority of the enemy. This battle greatly changed the plans and goals of Napoleon's army, significantly weakening it. In honor of this victory, a victory salute thundered in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg.
The bodies of the dead Russian, Belarusian, Polish, French, Austrian and Saxon soldiers were brought from all the surrounding villages. The total losses of the fighters were about 5 thousand people. The dead soldiers were buried near the villages of Kharki, Poddubno and Shereshevo.
There were no burials on the site of today's chapel. It was erected on the site of the battle in memory of the fallen soldiers on the initiative of General Prince Kropotkin. On the side walls are memorial plaques with information about the regiments that fought in the battle.
During the Great Patriotic War, the chapel was destroyed to the base. It was renovated for the 191st anniversary of the Battle of Gorodechno on the initiative of a native of the village of Kharki, local historian Leonid Nesterchuk.
In August 2015, a funeral ceremony was held here and the remains of 29 soldiers who died in the Battle of Gorodechno in 1812 were reburied.
