Arabovshchina. Monument to pilot V. Karvat
On the way from Baranovichi to Novogrudok, there is a small town called Arabovshchina. There are several monuments and memorials in the city. In the very center along the R–5 highway near the school there is a monument dedicated to the Hero of Belarus Vladimir Karvat.
On May 23, 1996, a Su-27 military aircraft crashed near Arabovshchina. On that day, a training flight of a Belarusian aviation fighter took place. V. Karvat began the flight at 22:44 and at 22:52, when the plane was at an altitude of 900 meters at a speed of 540 kilometers per hour, Karvat reported a technical malfunction of the aircraft.
An order came from the ground to return to the airfield urgently. Messages began to arrive about other problems in the car. At an altitude of 600 meters, the control system stopped working and the pilot was ordered to eject. At that time, the plane was over the villages of Bolshoe Gatische and Arabovshchina, and the pilot tried to divert the malfunctioning aircraft away from residential areas until the last minute.
The plane crashed a kilometer west of Arabovshchina at 22:54, 14 seconds after the report that the plane had become uncontrollable.
This disaster was witnessed by many local residents of the Arabovshchina, who immediately rushed to help. The plane was engulfed in flames and the pilot died when the plane crashed.
V. Karvat was buried on May 26, 1996 in Brest and in November 1996 he was awarded the title "Hero of Belarus".
