Mstislavl. The monument of archeology Maiden Mountain.

There are several significant archaeological sites in the city of Mstislavl. And the most legendary is Maiden Mountain. There are several versions of where the campaign got its name from.

According to legend, once upon a time, when enemies approached Mstislavl, the entire male population of the city went to war. And the women in their skirts put a lot of earth to build a defensive fortification, and a huge steep Mountain turned out. And there is another version, more plausible. That once in ancient times pagan festivals in honor of the pagan goddess Virgo took place on this natural hill.

Whatever the origin of the name, the Maiden Mountain has long been of interest to Belarusian historians and archaeologists. Even before the revolution in 1893, the monument was explored by the famous Belarusian archaeologist Evdokim Romanov. In Soviet times, archaeologists A. Levdansky, S. Dubinsky, M. Tkachev visited here. In 1959-1960, the excavations were carried out by L. Alekseev, an archaeologist from Moscow. During the excavations, numerous artifacts were found: ceramics, glass bracelets and much more.

Archaeologists state that the most intense life on Devichy Mountain took place from the middle of the 1st millennium BC to the 1st century AD. The archaeological monument is located on the right bank of the Vikhra River, above 10 meters above river level, and measures 100 by 50 meters. It is located between Proletarskaya and Pushkin streets. To climb Maiden Mountain, you need to have comfortable shoes.
