Belarus, Mogilev region, Osipovichi district, agro-town of Svisloch

Description

The agro–town of Svisloch is one of the oldest settlements on the Belarusian land. In the period from the 12th to the 14th centuries, it even served as the capital of a small principality. The only reminder of these times is the impressive castle hill, located on the southeastern outskirts of Svisloch. It is currently the largest significant archaeological site representing the Middle Ages.

The Castle Hill in Svisloch is the largest archaeological site in the region.

Castle Hill of the 12th–14th centuries is today the largest archaeological site in the area.

The Principality of Svisloch occupied a strategically advantageous geographical position. The large rivers Svisloch, Berezina and Ptitch flowed through its territory, which in ancient times served as waterways. In the XII–XIV centuries, the town of Svisloch was the center of the appanage principality. The castle was located on a hill near the Svisloch River and was protected from the north by a moat, which could only be crossed by a drawbridge. During its long history, the castle served as the residence of the Svisloch appanage prince, and the administrative center during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the possession of the Radziwills.

Svisloch Castle was repeatedly subjected to fires: in the 13th century, in 1506 from the raids of the Crimean Tatars, and in 1655 it was burned down by Russian troops. After these events, the castle was no longer restored as a fortification.

The brick and stone ruins of the monumental structure, mistaken by many for the remains of a castle, were actually part of the outbuildings of the Nezabytovskys' estate. These ruins became famous in the history of Belarusian cinema thanks to the director Viktor Turov, who used them as decorations for the film "The Black Stork".

From the top of castle hill, there is a picturesque and breathtaking view of the Svisloch River and its floodplain oak forests.
