Church of the Carmelites. Mstislav

The Church of the Virgin Mary is located in a very picturesque place of Mstislavl - near the defensive moat, through which the Castle Hill is visible. And if you climb the church tower, you can see an unusual panorama of the ancient city... The main body of the church was built at the beginning of the 17th century. At the same time, in the 17th century, interior fresco paintings were also made - 20 compositions. Among them, there are 2 frescoes on historical themes: "Murder of priests" and "Trubiatsky massacre", which tell about the tragic events in the city in 1654, when Mstislavl was burned by the Moscow army on the order of governor Trubiatsky. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was rebuilt in the style of the late Vilnius Baroque according to the project of the famous architect Johann Glaubitz. 6 altars decorated with stucco and sculptures have been preserved in the interior. There are contradictions. The 18th century fireplace has been preserved in the church, which is still in use today. Levon Vitan-Dubeykauski, who comes from the local nobility, was baptized in this church. He is a famous Belarusian writer, builder, architect, political and public figure. In the post-war period, archaeologists Oleg Trusau and Mikhas Tkachev, who are natives of Mstislavl, conducted excavations near the church. The interior of the church, together with the frescoes, needs restoration.
