Mstislavl. Men's gymnasium

During the time of the Russian Empire, the city of Mstiislavl was the center of the district, and the city needed a secondary educational institution. In 1908, the male gymnasium building was erected in the very center of the city among the historical buildings. The author of the project was the architect S. Valansevich. The architectural style is modern. The first director of the gymnasium was the historian and local historian Uladzimir Krasnyansky. After the revolution, in 1925, the Belarusian Pedagogical College began to work in this building. And the first director of the Pedagogical College was the outstanding philologist and linguist Ivan Kondratovich Bialkevich (1883 – 1960). While working at the technical school, Bialkevich began to compile a dictionary of the Kalinin district, since Mstislavschyna at that time was a part of the Kalinin district, the administrative center of which was Klimavichy. A community of writers and poets "Maladnyak" worked in the pedagogic school. During those years, many famous Belarusian poets studied here: People's Poet of Belarus Arkadz Kuleshov, Zmitrok Ostapenko, Stanislav Shushkevich, Yuliy Taubin and many others. Then, a secondary school operated in the building until 2001. In recent years, the building has been neglected. In the future, it is planned to carry out a restoration here and give it to a local history museum. Recently, a commemorative plaque to the philologist and public figure I. Bialkevich was installed on the building.
