Mogilev. The building of the Dnipro Hotel.
After the Peace of Riga in 1921, the State border passed under Minsk only 30 kilometers away. In this regard, the question of moving the capital to another city away from the border arose. And it was decided at the very top that the next capital of Soviet Belarus would be the city of Mogilev. For this reason, a Master plan for the development of Mogilev as a capital city was developed. It was planned to build a number of administrative and public buildings. And some of them were built. For example, the Government House, the KGB Ministry, Lenin House, Budyonny House and others.
A hotel "Dnipro" was built among the capital's buildings. In order to build it, it was necessary to demolish in 1938 the most important Orthodox church in the city – the Cathedral of St. Joseph, which was founded in 1780 by the Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria–Hungary. In honor of the visit of the 2 emperors to Mogilev, a Triumphal Arch was built, which is still located opposite the hotel. And over time, an entire square was formed in front of the cathedral, which was called Cathedral Square.
The church was demolished and for a long time the ruins were on this site, as there were not enough workers or equipment. The best architects of that time in Belarus were invited to build the hotel: Abel Bregman and Alexander Voinov. The building was built in 1940. The building is five storeys high. The main facade is highlighted by 2 side risalites. The main entrance is located in the center.
Now the building houses the Dnipro shopping center, where there are shops, offices and nightclubs.
