Mogilev. Memorial arch. Triumphal arch.

The memorial arch was built in 1780 for the arrival of Empress Catherine II to the city. Here she met with the Austrian Emperor Joseph I, during which they decided the fate of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The arch was a decoration of the Cathedral Square that existed in the city at that time. It was located opposite the great Joseph Cathedral, built in the classical style, the project of which was personally approved by the empress herself. However, in 1938 the temple was blown up, and in its place they built the Dnepr Hotel, which we can see today. The arch has been preserved to this day.

The rectangular memorial arch has a large arched niche in its center, and the walls of the arch have two projections, a wide profiled cornice, and a triangular pediment.

In the 1950s, the arch was restored and bas-reliefs with symbols of the socialist era were installed on it: the hammer and sickle.

In 1964, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Mogilev from the Nazi invaders, marble memorial plaques with the names of the units and formations of the Red Army awarded honorary titles for the liberation of the city were installed on the facade. In 2011, restoration work was carried out on the memorial plaques.

During its entire existence, the arch has changed its name three times: Arch of Glory, Triumphal Arch and Memorial Arch (today).

The Triumphal Arch is a modern neoclassical structure erected in 2017-2018 at the entrance to the city from the Minsk Highway, after the reconstruction of this highway was completed. Its construction was timed to coincide with the 750th anniversary of Mogilev, celebrated in 2017, as well as the fifth Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia held in the city. The construction of the arch was carried out through sponsorship from city enterprises and voluntary donations from city residents.

The beautiful and majestic arch, which has already become a memorable symbol of the city, is located in the center of a busy traffic circle and therefore it is very problematic to approach it, and probably not worth it. You can admire it from the side. The arch looks especially attractive in the evening, when the architectural structure is also illuminated with different shades of light!
