Grodno. The Craftsman's House.
In Grodno, on Eloisa Ozheshko Street, there is a small craftsman's house, which was built during the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 18th century. The building was erected sometime in 1765, along with twenty similar houses, which were called "Bosniak houses" according to a standard design.
This project was designed by German-born architect Johann Meser in a new urban quarter on the outskirts of Grodno. This new quarter was named Gorodnitsa. In the 18th century, it was considered to be on the outskirts of the city, but now it is the very center. The artisan buildings were erected on the main street of Gorodnitsa, which was then called Raskosha Street. Then, over time, the name of the street changed: Sadovaya, Bosniatskaya, Muravyevskaya, and now it is named after the Belarusian and Polish writer Eloisa Ozheshko. The name of the original Raskosha street was borrowed from the name of one of the taverns in Grodno.
The houses of artisans were built on the sides of Raskosha Street and were intended to house craftsmen and artisans who were invited from Europe to work at the royal manufactories in Grodno by the mayor of the city, Anthony Tizengauz.
The craftsman's house is a small one-story house with an attic. The only brick wall in the building is the facade with a pediment, which has a curly shape. The side walls and the back are made of wood. In 1990, the monument was restored according to the project of architect V. Barsukov.
Now the House of Crafts, which is a branch of the Gorodnitsa History Museum, operates in the building.
