Lida. Monument to Prince Gediminas
In the very historical center of the city of Lida, near the castle, there is a monument to the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania. And the monument was erected here for a reason, since Gediminas is the founder of the castle in Lida.
Gediminas (1275-1341) was the Grand Duke of Lithuania during whose time the territory of the state increased by 2 times. Gediminas' descendants formed the Gediminas dynasty.
The monument was erected in 2019 at the intersection of Zamkova and Grunwald streets in the square on the square of the 600th anniversary of Lida. In 2017, the local authorities of Lida announced a competition for the best sketch of the sculpture "The founder of the castle is Prince Gediminas". The winner was a joint sketch by sculptors Sergei Oganov and Olga Nechai. The grand opening took place on September 7, 2019, on the City Day holiday.
The weight of the bronze equestrian statue is about three tons. The height of the monument is six meters.
The monument to the prince looks like this. The bronze equestrian statue of the prince is placed on a high pedestal. Gediminas in the image of a calm and confident ruler who sits quietly on a horse. The prince is shown in knight's armor without a helmet and in rich decoration. Gediminas has a crown on his head, because, like Mindaugas, he called himself a king. One hand of the prince lies on the sword, which symbolizes the protection of the country by the Gediminas. A long mantle, as one of the symbols of princely power, falls on a pedestal. The name of the prince and one of the symbols of the state – the coat of arms of Kolyumny - are placed on the granite pedestal.
