Description
Not far from the village of Alexichi, located in the Zelvensky district of the Grodno region, an ancient high brick obelisk has been preserved. Its construction is a four-sided column topped by a concrete sphere on which a cross once stood. A memorial plaque was installed on one of the sides, but its inscription was apparently lost during the Second World War.

Alexichi. Memorial column
The origin of the column remains a mystery. According to one version, it appeared in the 17th century after the foundation of the Dominican monastery in neighboring Derechin. Priest Joseph Karsky claimed that the columns were erected in memory of the mission of the Dominican Order.
There is another version according to which the column is connected with the events of the Northern War. Presumably, at the beginning of the 18th century, the Swedes erected it in gratitude to the locals for their support. The Sapieha, who owned these lands, really sided with the Swedes, although the actions of the army of Charles XII were accompanied by destruction on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
According to Polish researcher Elzbieta Inevskaya, the column could be part of a series of monuments erected in honor of the Constitution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on May 3, 1791. Such columns were erected in different parts of Belarus, and some of them have survived to this day.
There is a legend among the locals that Napoleon himself built the column, but there is no historical evidence for this version. One way or another, the column remains a mute witness to the region's multi-layered history.
