Description

Until recently, only great connoisseurs of ancient architectural monuments knew about the village of Belaya Tserkov (means White Church). It is in this village that the ruins of the amazing Trinity Church, which was built in 1597-1598, are located. The church is truly unique - it is the only example of early Baroque in Belarus. Belarusians learned about the White Church when the special chamber festival began to take place here in 2017. Now, from the once almost abandoned and useless village, it has turned into a "bohemian" one, where interesting guys who are fond of Belarusian culture live.
The village of Belaya Tserkva is located on the shore of Lake Chereyskoe on a hill. It has been known since the 16th century. The village was never large, but it was known far beyond the borders of the Chereysky district, as pilgrims from different towns and villages came to pray at the White (Trinity) Church.

The ruins of the amazing Trinity Church, which was built in 1597-1598. This church is the only example of early Baroque in Belarus.

And the history of the White Church is as follows…

Bogdan Pavlovich Sapieha founded the Basilian monastery in these parts, at which the wooden church of the Holy Trinity was erected. And later, under Leo Sapieha built a stone temple. The temple was built on the shore of Golovlya Lake, today it is Chereyskoye. It was named Belotserkovsky. An interesting feature of the temple is its defensive significance. This is evidenced by the thickness of the walls of the tower: 1.75 - 2 m, and the very location of the church on a hill near the village, indicates that the church was defensive in nature. The belfry tower occupies a dominant position in the architecture of the Trinity Church. It is square in shape, three-tiered, symmetrical, with arched narrow window openings. The monastery of the time of Leo Sapieha has not been preserved.

Since 1838, it has been completely closed. The ruins of the church that we see now are the result of the destruction of the temple in 1930. According to the preserved photographs, it can be seen that there were still outbuildings around the temple. The main volume of the temple has a rectangular shape, which previously ended with an asp (has not been preserved). The side walls are divided by massive pilaster, wide arches. Almost nothing is known about the interior and the interior. The researchers point out that these ruins are the only ones in the world that have survived in their original form - since the time when elements of the early Baroque only began to appear in Italy.

In the second half of the 20th century, the church was chosen by climbers who used its walls for training, There is a memorial plaque on one wall of the church, a young climber died here during training. Apparently, this accident tells us that temples should be treated with great respect.

At the entrance to the peninsula there is a wooden stand with information about the Trinity Church.  There are even memories of old-timers. The information is provided in Belarusian, Russian and English. It turns out that this place is in demand not only among Belarusians, but also among foreigners. There is a territory for festivals behind the Trinity Church. There are festivals of art, music, crafts, as well as landscape design. There is also a wooden structure in the form of steps and seats on the shore of the lake. It is located in the shade under the trees. You can go down to the lake from a small pontoon and from the shore.

The temple is being watched now. Inside and around the temple is clean, there is no debris, no traces of bonfires. There are paper icons on the walls and flowers. Local residents are worried about the future of this historical monument. There is an icon hanging above the entrance and judging by the way it looks, it has been here for a long time. People come to the preserved prayer hall to pray.

The village of Belaya Tserkva is an extraordinarily beautiful place. The landscapes are extraordinary and picturesque. Here you can immerse yourself in history, or you can just admire the beauty of nature, think about how accurately and skillfully our ancestors chose places for the construction of temples.
