The Church of the Virgin Mary in Udelo is an architectural monument in a transitional style with features of Baroque and classicism.
In 1642, Mstislavl voivode Jozef Korsak founded a Franciscan monastery in Udelo and erected a wooden Catholic church nearby.
Since 1722, an independent parish has been operating here. The stone church was built in place of the wooden one from 1766 to 1791, after which it was consecrated in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The monastery buildings were completed in 1805, but in 1809 the complex was damaged by fire.
In 1837, the church was rebuilt, adding elements of classicism, including a triangular pediment and a simplified facade. The interior has also been modified in the spirit of classicism.
In 1851, the monastery was closed, and the church became a parish church.
In 1949, the church was closed, but in 1988 it was returned to the church. Father Jozef Bulka, rector of the church in Mosar, played a major role in the restoration of the parish at that time.
Since 2000, the church has been owned by the Franciscans again. The church has three naves, a semicircular apse and side sacristy. The facade is decorated with pilasters, niches and cornices. The appearance of the church is defined by such features as a portico with half columns, flat pilasters and others. The ensemble also includes a belfry, which simultaneously performs the function of a ceremonial chapel. It was built in the classical style in the second half of the 19th century. The interior decor was partially lost during this time. The area around the temple is a small landscaped park.
Today, the temple continues to function and attracts both locals and tourists interested in history and architecture.
It is an important symbol of the Catholic faith and represents a significant cultural heritage of the region.
