Bushiki. Holy Protection Church
Bushiki is located in the Glubokoe district of the Vitebsk region, part of the Zalessky village Council. The village is located 14 km from the city of Glubokoe and almost 200 km from the regional center. There is a White lake in the village.
The first mention of the territory dates back to the middle of the 15th century, when Bushiki, together with Glubokoe, were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Until the 17th century, the lands belonged to the Polotsk voivodeship. After the second partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1793, the village became part of the Russian Empire. In 1920, as a result of the Soviet-Polish confrontation, these territories became part of Poland. After 19 years, in 1939, the Bushiks were returned to the Belarusian lands.
The Church of the Intercession is the main attraction of the village. It is located on an elevation above the lake adjacent to the village and is visible already at the entrance, creating a sense of protection. The temple is dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is connected with the respect of believers for her intercession. Such churches in Slavic lands were built in different eras, reflecting the religious and architectural spirit of their time.
The Church of the Intercession in Bushiki, built in 1860, is made of brick in a retrospective Russian style with Baroque elements. Architecturally, it is complex: a two-tiered bell tower with a crown, a rectangular prayer hall with a four-pitched roof and a dome on an octagonal drum. The facades are decorated with arched windows with cross-shaped bindings, pilasters and an entablature. The arched entrance is complemented by a keel-shaped portal with the image of the Virgin. The churchyard is surrounded by a rubble fence.
