Landmark
Vitebsk region, Glubokoe city
Description
The cross on the island of Lake Velikoe in Glubokoe is a sacred symbol and a new business card of the city. Installed to mark the 600th anniversary of Glubokoe, it is made in the image of the cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk, the main patron saint of Belarus. The island is visible from any shore, and in the dark, the backlight turns on, and the glowing cross is mesmerizingly reflected in the water. Once the lake served as the border between the Polotsk and Vilno voivodeships, but today this place has become a point of attraction for tourists and a symbol of spiritual unity.

Salvation Island: a cross on the waters of the Lake Velikoe in Glubokoe
Lost among the hills and blue lakes of the Lake district is a city whose name speaks for itself - Glubokoe. This is a land where water meets sky, and history is intertwined with legends. But there is a place in this city marked by special silence and grandeur. This is a small island on Lake Velikoe, where a cross rises above the water like a candle.
Imagine: you are standing on the shore, the wind is stirring the reeds, and your attention is focused on a lonely island in the distance. On it, rushing skyward, stands a monumental cross. During the day, it is austere and majestic against the background of the Belarusian sky, and at dusk the backlight turns on, and the cross begins to glow in the dark, reflecting in the water in a trembling golden way. This sight is fascinating: it seems as if the water itself and the sky have joined in a silent dialogue.
However, this cross is not just a decoration of the landscape and not a tribute to the modern fashion for landscaping. This is a deep symbol, installed here for a reason. On the eve of the celebration of the 600th anniversary of Glubokoe, the city received an invaluable spiritual gift. A cross was erected on the island, created in the image and likeness of the main national shrine - the cross of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk.
For Belarusians, the name Euphrosyne of Polotsk means no less than the name of the Holy Land does for Christians all over the world. She was the first woman in the East Slavic lands to be canonized, the heavenly patroness and intercessor of White Russia. Unfortunately, her cross, which was lost during the war, remains a standard of faith and spiritual strength. By installing an exact replica of it on the water surface, Glubokoe seemed to put the seal of eternity on its land, reminding every passing person that true values are imperishable.
But the history of this place goes even deeper. Lake Velikoe itself was once not just a body of water, but a natural boundary separating different worlds. In those days, when Glubokoe was not a city, but a bone of contention between the magnate clans, the waters of the lake served as the border between the Vilno and Polotsk voivodeships. On different shores lived people who obeyed different laws and influential families - Korsaks, Radziwills, Zenovichs. The water remembers the noise of border skirmishes and the whispers of secret negotiations. And today, looking at the cross in the middle of the lake, you realize that where the borders of hostility used to be, a symbol of unity and peace has now been established.
The island on which the cross is installed has become the hallmark of Glubokoe today. You can't swim here, but you can see it from any point of the embankment. It attracts glances, makes you stop and think. Locals like to make dates here or just come to sit on the shore, looking at the glowing cross in the distance. For tourists, this place is a must-visit: the opportunity to take stunning sunset shots and touch the living history.
Glubokoe is often called the city of lakes and legends, but if you look for its heart, then it will beat right here - on a quiet island in the middle of Velikoe Lake. Where the wind carries prayers over the water, and the cross, like a lighthouse, shows the way to lost souls.
