Mogilev. Vilenskaya Street

During the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in Mogilev, the main street was the street that led to the capital-Vilenskaya Street. In Soviet times, it was named after Soviet General Ivan Lazarenko (1895-1944), who died during the liberation of Mogilev region from the Nazis in 1944 during Operation Bagration. Initially, the street was called Velikoknyazhitskaya, and then Vilenskaya. A defensive gate tower was built at the entrance to the city along Vilenskaya Street. The gates were initially wooden, but in the early 19th century they were rebuilt in the classical style. It was demolished in the early 20th century.

To this day, several stone pre-revolutionary buildings of the early 20th century have been preserved on Lazarenko Street. If you walk from the drama theater and the Philharmonic Hall along the new bridge over the Dubrovenka River, then these several stone buildings are on the left.

These were the so-called apartment buildings. On the ground floor, as a rule, there were shops and offices. And the rest of the floors were rented out for hotels and residential apartments. Among these buildings is the Brooke Hotel. The foundation of one of the buildings indicates the date of construction of the house-1910. And on one facade, the date 1910 is also indicated on the triangular pediment. Several buildings are under restoration.
