A small, quiet square in the very center of Minsk is a comfortable and peaceful place with a monument to the great poet.
Adam Mickiewicz Square today is a space that combines solitude and liveliness. Here you can enjoy a quiet walk along the manicured alleys under the shade of trees or just sit on a bench admiring the monument. The square attracts young people and families, especially in the evenings when it is illuminated by the lights.
It is known that during the Great Patriotic War, the territory of the future park was severely damaged as a result of bombing. It was in June 1941.
In 2003, thanks to the idea of the Polish diaspora, a monument to Adam Mickiewicz, a famous Polish poet and leader of the national liberation movement of Belarusian origin, was erected here. The three-meter-high bronze statue, created by sculptors Andrei Zaspitsky and Alexander Finsky, has become a significant cultural landmark of the city. The opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Council of the Republic, the Marshal of the Polish Senate and the ambassadors of both countries.
The monument depicts Mickiewicz in adulthood, returning to his homeland after a long journey. Indeed, the poet was forced to leave his country and emigrate when he was barely 26 years old.
In 2009, the Minsk City Council officially named the square after Adam Mickiewicz.
A small, quiet square in the very center of Minsk is a convenient and peaceful place with a monument to the great poet, which is definitely worth a visit during a leisurely stroll around the city or during a tourist excursion.
