Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema
The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema was founded in Minsk in 1966 on the initiative of Belarusian filmmakers on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the release of the first national film "Forest Tale". Initially, it functioned as a departmental museum at the Belarusfilm studio, collecting, preserving and popularizing materials about Belarusian cinema.
From 1982 to 1988, the museum was located in the Republican Cinema House (Church of Saints Simon and Alena) of the Union of Cinematographers of the BSSR, performing mainly archival functions.
At the beginning of 2002, the museum opened for regular visits in a three-story building reconstructed by decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, an architectural monument of the first half of the 20th century (4 Sverdlova St.).
Since January 2005, the museum has become a branch of the institution "State Museum of the History of Theatre and Musical Culture of the Republic of Belarus", and since September 2014 - a branch of the State Institution "National History Museum of the Republic of Belarus".
The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema focuses on collecting, documenting, systematizing and displaying materials related to the history of domestic cinema and cinema art in general.
The museum's exposition is unique and consists of two complementary parts: an exhibition and a screen. The exhibition presents materials on the development of Belarusian cinema, its creators and achievements. However, a full immersion in the history of cinema is impossible without watching films, which makes the screen part of the exposition important. In 2017, the museum's cinema hall was restored and stylized as a retro cinema of the 1930s, which allows viewers to feel the atmosphere of that time.
The Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema is located in a three-story building, where each floor is dedicated to a specific topic: on the first floor there are cinema halls where visitors can watch films from the museum collection. On the second floor there is a permanent exhibition "Belarusian Cinema as a National Heritage" (about 900 exhibits). Here are costumes, models, scenery, documentation, archival films, cinematographic equipment and other materials telling about the history of Belarusian cinema. Visitors can get acquainted with the main stages of the development of national cinema, learn about its founders, the structure of film production, significant events, the best authors and their works. The third floor is intended for thematic, personal and collective exhibitions related to cinema and fine arts.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the cinema hall hosts systematic screenings of Belarusian, Soviet and foreign film classics, as well as additional screenings as part of various events. By prior request, you can order an individual viewing of films from the museum's film collection.
The museum's film collection includes the following sections: for children, animation, opera and ballet on screen, Belarusian literature and culture, Soviet and Russian films in Belarusian, documentary portrait films, documentary popular science films, musical films, foreign films, Belarusian films.
You can visit the Museum of the History of Belarusian Cinema either on your own or with a guided tour.
