Gilibert's Park is a great place to relax with the whole family and for guests of the beautiful city of Grodno.
Jean Gilibert founded the first higher educational institution in Belarus, the Grodno Medical Academy. The garden he founded was a visual teaching aid for the academy. Three years after its foundation, the garden was considered one of the best in Europe, and had 2,000 plant species. Rare representatives of the flora, brought from Lyon, grew here.
Gilibert devoted a significant part of his life to studying the nature of Belarus, collecting herbariums in forests, describing medicinal plants and their uses. The planting of Gilbert's time has hardly survived to our time. Only a few plantings remain in the eastern part of the current park.
When Gilibert had to leave the city, the care of the garden passed into the hands of the city authorities. The northern part of the park has a planning structure similar to the botanical garden of Gilibera. The park had a mixed landscape layout. The city Garden was designed by V. Tansky, who developed its plan in the twenties of the XX century. Some elements of the project he created have survived to this day. The garden was located in the southwestern part of the modern park. Jan Kakhanovsky took over the guardianship of the botanical garden, at one point there were more than 800 species of various plants. Part of the city garden was transformed and decorated with a bust of the Polish writer Eliza Ozheshko.
During the Second World War, the military field hospital buried soldiers in the park. After the war, all the remains were buried in one mass grave.
Deciduous and mostly coniferous trees now grow in the park.
Nowadays, the park enchants with its alleys, gazebos, the quiet murmur of a clear river, delicate bridges and bronze statues. There is a statue in the park. Gorodnichanka is a girl sitting thoughtfully in a clearing. There is also a monument to the outstanding architect of Grodno, Giuseppe Sacco.
Gilebera Park is divided into several zones. The area of greenery and alleys is most impressive. There are many flowers and flower beds here.
Currently, the park has attractions, in particular, a large Ferris wheel (42 m - the second tallest in Belarus), fountains, including light and music, as well as bridges and interesting park sculptures.
Architectural monuments are located on the territory of the park: the Poniatowski (Tizengauz) Theater, the oldest theater venue in Belarus, the Chetvertinsky Palace (the Royal Medical Academy), the 18th-century lyamus (now a restaurant). Earlier at the valley Gorodnichanka was the palace of the Tizenhaus, on the site of the central part of which there is now a grave to Soviet soldiers with Eternal Flame.
There is a sculpture by French scientist Jean Gilibert at the entrance to the park. The park hosts city events. This is a great place to relax with the whole family and for the guests of the most beautiful city. Grodno. Here everyone can find their favorite place according to their soul and preferences.
