Description
The stele dedicated to the 850th anniversary of Grodno was erected in 1978 in honor of the celebration of the significant anniversary of the city. This monument includes two stylized steles, each of which is 31 meters high. They are united at the top by a symbolic coat of arms made of cast glass. This coat of arms depicts the number "850" on a red-green background, which symbolizes the importance of this date for the city.
There are two forged copper figures at the base of the monument. The first figure, symbolizing "Courage", depicts a warrior in armor. The second figure represents "Hospitality" and depicts a woman with an embroidered towel in her hands. The height of each of these majestic figures is 6 meters, which gives the monument additional expressiveness and significance.

Grodno. Monument in honor of the 850th anniversary of Grodno
Grodno is one of the few cities in Belarus that has preserved its historical outline unchanged to the present day. The first mention of the city is found in the chronicles of 1128, when Prince Vsevolodko was the ruler. This is considered an official date, but there is an alternative opinion that the city was mentioned even earlier.
Throughout its centuries-old history, Grodno was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and then belonged to the Russian Empire. In 1944, the city was awarded the honorary title of the capital of the Grodno region, and it retains this status to this day.
One of the most significant monuments of the city is two obelisks with a height of 31 meters, united in the upper part by a stained glass block with the image of the number "850". This symbolic monument perpetuates the history and cultural heritage of Grodno.
At the base of the pillars, on the western and eastern sides, two allegorical sculptures with a height of 6 meters are installed in niches: a warrior in armor and a woman with an embroidered towel on her hands. Initially, these sculptures were lined with copper, but in the 1990s the metal was stolen and the figures were replaced with cement replicas that changed their original appearance.
An alley decorated with wide green lawns and decorative lanterns leads to this monument. At the beginning of the alley there is a memorial stone, on the surface of which the inscription "850th anniversary" is carved.
Grodno is rightfully proud of its rich historical and cultural heritage, preserved through the centuries. This city attracts tourists, offering them a unique opportunity to enjoy the architectural sights and feel the spirit of antiquity.
