Grodno. Maksimovich's Palace.
In the city of Grodno, on the pedestrian part of Ozheshko Street, there is a stone two-story Maksimovich Palace. The building was built in the early 19th century in the classical style.
The palace was built for the Grodno vice-governor Konstantin Maksimovich (1768-1831) in 1803. During the war with the French in 1812, Jerome Bonaparte's headquarters were located in the palace for several days. Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860) was the youngest brother of Napoleon and Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, Marshal of France.
Then various state institutions took over the building: the provincial government, the archive, the Department of the state Treasury, the office of the tax inspectorate, the pantry chamber and the restaurant.
During the Polish–Soviet war in the summer of 1920, the Revolutionary Committee of the city of Grodno was located here for a while and Felix Dzerzhinsky (1877-1926), a Russian Soviet public and political figure, founder of the Cheka, stayed here for a couple of days.
After the Riga Peace of 1921, Grodno was under the rule of the Polish state until 1939. The office of the Grodno County Mayor, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Public Works, the local museum, the Grodno County savings Bank and the editorial office of the Newspaper of the Polish Land of Grodno worked in the Mksimovich Palace.
In Soviet times, after the Great Patriotic War, the executive committee of the regional Council of People's Deputies worked in the building.
There are memorial plaques on the building to P. Stolypin and F. Dzerzhinsky.
