Gomel. Alley of Heroes

The central part of the memorial sign is made in the form of an arch, which is clearly visible from Sovetskaya Street. In the very center there is a sculpture of a soldier, which was located at this place earlier and was reconstructed. On both sides of the arch there are two walls with 44 commemorative plaques, which contain information about the defenders of the Fatherland buried in a mass grave. The remains of 135 participants in the defense of Gomel in August 1941, as well as partisans, underground workers and those who brought long-awaited freedom in November 1943, rest here. All of them gave their lives for the current peaceful life of the Belarusian people.

Along the central alley, 41 commemorative steles are installed, on which the names of Heroes of the Soviet Union and full cavaliers of the Order of Glory, whose fate was connected with Gomel, are immortalized. Among them are natives of the city of Nad Sozh, soldiers who took part in the liberation of the city, as well as those who lived and worked here. All monuments now have signs with QR codes that allow anyone to scan them and get complete information about each hero.

In 1952, a monument-sculpture of a soldier was erected on the mass grave. In 2014, a reconstructed sculpture of a soldier was installed on the site of the mass burial of soldiers and partisans. After extensive work to replace the heating main in the Student Square of Gomel, many remains were raised at the site of the ancient cemetery. The square was landscaped: the pedestrian paths were tiled, lawns were planted, and lanterns were installed. An Alley of Heroes was created right next to the Roman Catholic Church. Its grand opening took place on July 3, 2014, on the Day of the Liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders.

The Alley of Heroes and the memorial complex are also an important cultural and educational space. Various events dedicated to the history and memory of heroic events are held here. Visiting this memorial allows everyone to touch the heroic history of Gomel and honor the memory of those who fought for a peaceful future.
