Red Coast. Monument to children - victims of war.
The memorial complex dedicated to the children who were victims of the Great Patriotic War was opened on June 28, 2007. This is the only memorial "To the Children - Victims of War" in the CIS. The monument is located in an apple orchard near the village of Krasny Bereg, where one of the largest children's donor concentration camps was located. The fascists forcibly took children from their mothers in different areas of the Gomel region. Then they were sent to a collection point, where the children's blood was taken for wounded German officers, and after that they were exiled to hard labor in the provinces of Germany. A total of 1,990 children were taken away.
The design of the memorial monument was carried out by the Lenin Prize laureate, architect Leonid Levin. Construction began in 1994 and was completed only in 2006. The creative team was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus for the creation of the memorial.
This memorial is not about violence, it is about childhood stolen by war, and is full of dramatic, heart-wrenching symbolism. The memorial opens with a sculpture of a girl standing alone in the middle of the square, with her arms crossed above her head. She is a symbol of all the children who died in the war. The center of the composition is the "Square of the Sun." An apple orchard is planted in the center of the square, from which alleys diverge in different directions - the rays of this sun. However, the main entrance to the square is through a wide black Ray of Memory, on which the Dead Class is located with desks made of white concrete and a black board. It symbolizes the children who died in school. A stream of blood-red polished granite flows along the gray slabs. On the board is a suicide letter to her father from a 15-year-old girl, Katya Susanina, who was going to her death. She died in the camp on her fifteenth birthday, March 12, 1943. On the back of the board is a map showing the locations of other death camps in Belarus. The "Sun Square" features stained glass windows with children's drawings made in concentration camps. In the center of the square is a childhood dream - the White Sailboat.
