Slonim. Church of St. Andrew.
There are many architectural monuments in the city of Slonim. There are also quite a few ancient religious buildings in the city. One of the most majestic temples in the city is the Catholic Church of St. Andrew. The church is located a little away from the main historical part of Slonim, behind the water channel, on Lev Sapieha Square.
The first Catholic church in Slonim, as researchers note, was built at the end of the 15th century with money from King Casimir IV Jagiellon. In the 16th century, the mayor of Slonim, Lev Sapieha, donated land for the church. In the 17th century, the church was destroyed during the war. In 1775, a brick church of St. Andrew was built, which was badly damaged during the First World War and restored during the Polish era. After the war, during the Soviet years, the church was closed and a warehouse was located there. In 1990, the shrine was handed over to Catholics and restoration began. Now the church is active.
The church is built in the late Baroque style with elements of Rococo, single-nave. The main facade is wavy, two-towered with a figured shield. Monumental sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul in the niches of the facade. In the interior there are several altars made in the Rococo style. The walls of the temple are decorated with decorative painting. On the side walls there are 2 frescoes, the plot of which is taken from the Bible. The interior is decorated with decorative moldings.
When you see this church, it may remind you of a delicious cream cake rather than a building. The building is very majestic and elegant, with many decorations and sculptures. The church is active.
