Description

A memorial boulder has been erected near the Kolozhskaya Church in Grodno, which is dedicated to the memory of Prince David Gorodensky.
Prince David (1283-1326) was the headman of Grodno, the military commander of the Grand Duke Gediminas. The prince was a renowned military commander and took part in numerous battles and campaigns. He was killed in 1326. The prince was buried in Grodno near the Kolozhskaya church.

Grodno. Memorial boulder in honor of Prince David Gorodensky.

In the city of Grodno, if you go to the Kolozhskaya Church of the 12th century, you will see a memorial boulder dedicated to Prince David Gorodensky. Prince David (1283-1326) was the headman of Grodno. The military commander of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. It is not known exactly where the prince comes from. According to one version, he is the son of Prince Dovmont.


             He was first mentioned in chronicles in 1314, when he led the defense of the city of Novogrudok in the Grodno region from the Teutonic Order. He led the campaign of the army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1319 against the Teutonic Order. He came to the aid of the city of Pskov twice in 1323 to fight off Livonia and the Teutons. In 1324, he led the army of the principality to Mazovia.


              He was killed in 1326 during a joint campaign with the Polish king Vladislav against Brandenburg. The Mazovian knight Andrzej Gost killed the prince. According to one version, the knight was bribed by the Teutonic Order.


            It is believed that the prince was buried in Grodno near the Kolozhskaya church. The prince was a good warrior who became a legendary hero during his lifetime.


             One of the central streets in Grodno near the castle is named in honor of the prince. There is also a monument to Prince David. A commemorative coin dedicated to the prince has been issued in Belarus.
