Grodno. Monument to Prince Vitovt
In Grodno, during your walk along Zamkova Street, you will definitely come to the old and new castles. And before visiting the ancient Belarusian strongholds, you will see a small modest wooden monument. This is a sculpture of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas the Great (1350-1430).
The monument to the prince did not appear here by chance. Here in Grodno was the residence of Prince Vitovt and it was from here that the prince led his troops to the Battle of Grunwald, in which he won a brilliant victory. Vytautas the Great - Prince of Grodno, Lutsk, Grand Duke of Lithuania, King of the Hussites. Son of Prince Keistut and nephew of Prince Algirdas, cousin of King Jagiello of Poland.
He became known during his lifetime as Vytautas the Great, thanks to his successful rule in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was under Vytautas that the Principality of Lithuania acquired the greatest power, and its borders ran from Mozhaisk to Bialystok and from the Black Sea to the Baltic.
The monument was donated to the city of Grodno in the early 1990s, and is a wooden sculpture of Vitovt, which is installed between the Old and New Castle. Souvenirs are usually sold near the monument and commemorative antique coins are made.
