Grodno. 18 Zamkovaya Street. The building of the former Carriage House.
In the city of Grodno, at the intersection of Zamkovaya (Castle) Street and David Gorodensky Street (18, Zamkovaya Street), there is a stone two-story architectural monument of the 18th - 19th centuries.
During the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, during the 1560 'volochnaya pomera', this area of land belonged to the Grodno land office. But already in the inventory for 1680, the land is mentioned as follows: on "the street from the Podol past the Old Maid", as "Zhidovskaya square, built up, where the Zhid (Jew) lives."
Today's monument was built between 1783 and 1795. In those days, it was a one-story house for a master purpose. Carriages were stationed here. Already in the days of the Russian Empire in 1831, the house was considered a prison. It is possible that there was a living quarters for prison guards here. Later during the 19th century, the building housed a barracks. First, the cadet barracks, and then for the provincial garrison battalion in 1887. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the second floor was added.
After the Peace of Riga in 1921, Grodno was ceded to Poland by 1939 before the arrival of Soviet power. And during this period, in the 1920s, the house belonged to the state, and a barracks was located here.
After the Great Patriotic War, a judicial institution worked in the building. Now there are shops and various establishments in this house: a hairdresser, a Belarusian flax store and a cafe with a simple name.... "Just a cafe".
