Description

The Church of the Virgin Mary in Bolshaya Rogoznitsa was built in 1926. At that time, this settlement was part of Poland. The church building is characterized by a laconic, even somewhat harsh appearance, which is achieved through a combination of rubble stone used for the construction of walls, simple shapes and the absence of external decorative elements. The Church of the Virgin Mary in Bolshaya Rogoznitsa is considered an example of constructivism.

The Church of the Virgin Mary in Bolshaya Rogoznitsa, built of rubble stone, is an example of constructivism.

In the Grodno region, in the Mostovsky district, there is a village whose name probably came from the marsh cattail grass growing along the Yukhnovka River, or from the coarse fabric known as matting. However, there are no contradictions here, since matting is originally made from the fibers of this plant. Locals also call their village Rogozhnitsa. There is a legend that in the middle of the 16th century, Queen Bona Sforza passed through this settlement, and the inhabitants presented her with a beautifully woven large matting blanket.

In 1906, ownership passed to the nobleman Oskar Meshtovich. It was during this period that a Romanesque-style church with elements of constructivism was erected in Bolshaya Rogoznitsa, built from boulders collected from the surrounding fields. This temple was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. The uniqueness of this religious building lies in its strict aesthetic design, which is rare in Eastern Europe and more in line with the Lutheran churches of the Baltic and Scandinavia.

The temple is single-towered, in front of its entrance there is a simple frame and a rubble stone fence. This is an unusual monumental structure. The temple is located near the road itself, it surprises with its originality and rather harsh appearance. The church, built entirely from crushed boulders collected from fields near the village, looks non-trivial. The building is characterized by simple shapes and the absence of external decorative elements. The stones from which the walls are lined have different shades of color, they want to be considered. The perimeter of the temple is surrounded by a temple, also made of large stones. The area around the temple is well-groomed and simple.

A very beautiful and unusual church, a beautiful place! Come and see it – you won't regret it.
