Volozhin. Local History Museum.
The Volozhin Local History Museum is located far from the historical center on M. Gorky Street. The museum opened its doors to visitors in 2006. The exhibition area is 282 square meters and has about 8 thousand exhibits. The exhibition presents archaeological finds from the castle in Losk village (of Volozhin district), ancient books and documents, a numismatic collection and much more.
The museum itself is located in an ancient beautiful building that was built a hundred years ago, when Volozhin was part of the Polish state. In those years, good-quality houses for civil servants began to be built on the outskirts of the city along Gorky Street and the whole area was named "Damki". Among the buildings there was a police station, a prison, a house for the mayor and others.
The museum is located in the building of the city mayor. The building had 3 entrance doors, and the walls are up to one meter thick. From Gorky Street, the entrance was intended for the reception of guests and visitors immediately entered the large hall, which consisted of 3 parts. Each part of the hall was divided from the other by a sliding door, which was decorated with patterns. On the ground floor there were also rooms for a kitchen, a dining room and a maid's room. A twisted wooden staircase led to the second floor, where the attic was built. There were rest rooms here.
And under the house there was a large basement with a ventilation system for storing food.
To date, the interior has been significantly changed. Souvenirs can be purchased at the museum.
