If you walk on foot or drive along Independence Avenue, you will definitely pass Victory Square, in the center of which rises a 38-meter obelisk. The opening of the monument took place in 1954 and was timed to the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from the Nazis. Minsk. Victory Square
Victory Square is located at the intersection of Independence Avenue with Kisialev and Zakharava Streets. Previously, this square was called Kruglaya (means Round), although, if you look closely, the square is not round in plan, but oval. And the square began to take shape even before the Great Patriotic War, when two residential houses with an arched plan were built here. Further development of the square took place already after the war. The area is a rectangle of 225 by 175 meters. The compositional dominant in the middle of the square is the Victory monument. In 1950, a competition was held to create a project of a monument to soldiers of the Soviet Army and Belarusian partisans. The project of George Zaborsky, who worked together with the architect Uladzimir Korol. Leading sculptors of Soviet Belarus also worked on the creation of the monument: S. Selikhanov, A. Glebov, A. Bembel and Z. Azgur. An eternal flame has been created in front of the monument as a symbol of memory of those who died for the independence of our country.
