Minsk. Memorial "Island of Tears"
The monument was created for several years with public donations and state funds.
The complex was built on an island with a total area of 0.61 hectares. Construction began back in 1988 at the end of the Afghan war. The architectural dominant is the chapel, the prototype of which is the church of Euphrosyne of Polotsk of the 12th century. In the interior of the church, there are four altars with carved names of 771 soldiers from Belarus who died in Afghanistan. The dome and walls of the temple are painted on biblical motifs. There are also images of the archangels Michael and Gavriila, who were considered the guardians of Belarusian soldiers since the time of the Grunwald battle. There is a small drawbridge from Trinity suburb and right in front of the chapel there is a boulder with an icon of the Mother of God. This boulder was laid back in 1988 at the very beginning of the construction of the memorial. On the left side of the chapel is a sculpture of a small weeping angel, and next to it are stones on each of which are written the names of the provinces in Afghanistan where the battles with the Soviet troops took place.
The chapel itself was built in 1995-1996. The authors of the monument are sculptors Yu. Pavlov, G. Pavlov, A. Pavlov, artists T. Koralev - Pavlov, M. Koralev, engineer V. Laptsevich, architect D. Khamyakov.
