Description
Smorgon is an administrative center located in the north of the Grodno region. The first records of it date back to 1503, when the settlement belonged to the Zenovich family. Like many Belarusian cities, Smorgon offers tourists many interesting places. One of them is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which has been preserved since the middle of the 16th century. Another significant building is the Transfiguration Church. She is the architectural dominant of Smorgon. Built on a hill next to the picturesque Oxna River, the Transfiguration Church stands on the site of another Orthodox church, which was destroyed in Soviet times.

The architectural dominant of Smorgon, opened to parishioners at the beginning of the 21st century.
Opened to parishioners at the beginning of the 21st century, this stone shrine recalls the former Orthodox church. The construction of the modern cathedral began in 1989 according to the project of the Minsk architect Anatoly Shabalin, but due to lack of funds it took 20 years.
This is the largest building in the city, accommodating about one and a half thousand believers, is located on a hill and is clearly visible from different parts of Smorgon. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, as it is also called, is made in the Byzantine style with elements of neoclassicism and has five domes. In its underground part there is a crypt in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Helper of sinners". The church was built at the expense of parishioners and local businessmen, as well as with the support of the state budget. The consecration took place on September 6, 2009, under the leadership of Archbishop Guria and other clergy.
Previously, there was a stone church on the site of the modern temple, built in 1840, and in its history there are also mentions of a wooden temple that existed here since 1662. Both temples were damaged during the two world wars.
In 1962, the church was closed, and in the late 1960s it was demolished and a park appeared in its place. Now the new church is located at the address Krasnoarmeyskaya 3.
This is a very beautiful majestic temple that adorns the city and is the center of its spiritual life. It is large and spacious inside with laconic interior decoration and a five-tiered iconostasis that makes an impression.
The Transfiguration Church attracts the attention of tourists and delights with its beauty.
