The Assumption Church in Gorodets celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2024.

The history of the Assumption Church of the Gomel Diocese is inextricably linked with the history of Kievan Rus and the Russian Orthodox Church. Some information about her is kept in the National Historical Archive of Belarus. In the past centuries, during difficult times for the Belarusian people, fraternities operated in the town of Gorodets. Prayer meetings were held in private homes. The first church building was erected in 1760 thanks to the landowner Kholetsky.

The current church building was built in 1864 and since then has served not only as a place for worship, but also as a center of spiritual life for parishioners. The architectural style of the Assumption Church combines elements of Russian and Byzantine styles, which gives it a unique look. Elegant domes and beautiful iconostases create an atmosphere of peace and reverence.

Divine services in the church continued until 1937, after which the church was closed and the priests were arrested. It was a period of the most severe persecution of the church, when the servants of the faith were subjected to brutal reprisals. The interior of the Gorodets church was destroyed, and the temple was turned into a granary for a collective farm.

After the Great Patriotic War, the temple was operational until 1957. At that time, the building was boarded up and painted. From 1982 to 1996, the building was completely renovated and central heating was installed. In 1999, a new bell was purchased at the expense of the parishioners. Gorodets Church has survived, having overcome all the trials of time and historical events.

In 2023, heating was restored in the church, windows were replaced, a central lectern, church utensils and icons were purchased for the twelve-day holidays.

During its long history, the Assumption Church has experienced many events, but it has always remained a symbol of hope and faith for the local population. In recent years, the church has been actively involved in the life of the community.

The Assumption Church in Gorodets is not just an architectural monument, but a living testimony of faith and traditions that continue to be passed down from generation to generation.
