Mazyr. Cathedral of Archangel Michael.
In the very historical center of ancient Mazyr, near the castle hill, there is a majestic two-towered temple of Archangel Michael. At the beginning of the 17th century, King Sigismund III Vasa of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth gave a fund to the Bernardine monastery in Mazyr. And in 1645, the retired colonel Stefan Lozka donated a plot with a garden and a vegetable garden for the monastery. During the bloody war between the Muscovite Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations in the middle of the 17th century, the town of Mazyr, together with the monastery, was burned down. In the middle of the 18th century, the construction of a brick church and monastery began, and the founder was the famous Belarusian tycoon Kazimir Askerka. The brick church of Michael the Archangel was consecrated in 1775. In the second half of the 18th century, the brick residential building of the monastery, which belonged to the Catholic order of the Bernardines, was completed. The monastery had the following dimensions: 70 by 14.5 cubits. Farm buildings were also built: a brewery, a stable, a carriage house and a mill. At the monastery, the library had 203 books. After the anti-Russian uprising in our lands in 1830-1831, the Catholic monastery was closed and handed over to Orthodox believers. During the Soviet era, in the 1930s, the NKVD prison of the Poles region existed in the church. Now the temple has been handed over to believers and has been restored. The burials of the Askerkas were restored in the crypt. Archangel Michael's Church is a monument of late Baroque architecture. It is a three-nave and two-tower basilica. There is a local museum of local history in the residential building. If you wish, you can ask to be let into the dungeons and be shown an unusual museum.
