Geranyony. Castle.
The remains of a 15th-century castle remain in the town of Geranyony, which is on the very border with Lithuania. At that time, the tycoon, the chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Vilna voivode Albrecht Gasthold owned Geranyony. Then kings, great princes and magnates of Sapegi owned Geranyony. In the mid-17th century war between the Moscovite Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the castle was badly damaged. During the Northern War in 1708, King Stanislaus Leszczynski lived in the castle for some time. In the 18th century, the castle fell into disrepair and began to be dismantled for building materials. In the 19th century, the ruins of the castle were painted by the artist and composer Napoleon Orda. The castle was surrounded by an earthen moat, and an earthen rampart 10 meters high and about 15 meters wide was filled in front of the moat. The perimeter of the rampart was more than 700 meters. The castle had the appearance of a square 27 by 27 meters. Cylindrical towers with a diameter of 8 meters were built at each corner of the castle. The walls of the two-meter-thick towers are made of stone and externally faced with brick. A brick gate was erected near the castle. The castle in Geranyony was built in the years when artillery played a significant role. And that's why earthen ramparts with bastions took the main blow during the siege.
Geranyony's Castle in the 16th century was a significant modern defensive fortification. On the approaches to the castle, one of the points of defense was the brick Nicholas Church, which has survived to our time. In recent years, the surrounding area around the castle has been landscaped. Paths with railings were made on the former defensive ramparts. Installed information boards with pictures and plans.
