Bolshaya Medvyadka. The estate of Ignatius Domeyko.
In the Korelichi district, in the village of Bolshaya Medvyadka, the remains of Ignatiy Domeyko's estate have been preserved. There is an 18th-century Orthodox church in the local cemetery not far from the estate.
The place was first mentioned in documents in the 17th century during the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1679, the Medvyadka estate was mentioned in documents as the Protasovich estate. In 1692, the estate was acquired by the Rimshy. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the owners changed several times. At the end of the 18th century, the estate belonged to the Domeyko family. It was in this manor that Ignat Domeyko, a scientist and public figure, was born.
Ignat Domeyko (1802-1889) was a scientist and writer, a public figure, a member of the Philomath society, and a memoirist. Domeyko's mother was the aunt of Marylya Vereshchaka, whom the poet Adam Mickiewicz fell in love with. His mother was also a relative of national hero Tadeusz Reitan and Tadeusz Kosciuszko. He studied at Vilnius University, where he participated in a secret public organization, the Philomath Society, together with poets Jan Chechot and A. Mickiewicz.
After his arrest in 1823 for participating in a partnership, he was under investigation and sent to the family estate under police supervision. After participating in the uprising in 1830-31, he emigrated to France and Chile, where he studied science. For his scientific and social activities in Chile, he was named a national hero of the country. There is a monument to him in Santiago. A mineral and a plant, a planet and a small town in Chile are named after Domeyko.
The manor house was made of stone, built in the traditions of folk architecture and Baroque. The building was U-shaped in plan, one-story, to which a two-story left wing was completed. In the 19th century, the town was visited by the composer and artist Napoleon Orda, who left an image of the estate.
A stone one-story wing from the estate has been preserved to our time. A museum named after Ignatiy Domeyko has been created in the local school.
