Zhukov Borok. The watermill.

In the Minsk region, on the border with Grodno, a small village with the poetic name Zhukov Borok was lost. Today, only about 50 people live here, but this place has an amazing history that can rival the saturation of large cities.

A place at a crossroads

The village is located 12 km from Stolbtsy and 12 km from the village of Mir, on the right bank of the Neman River at the confluence of the Yachenka River. It was the location on the banks of a navigable river that determined the fate of this settlement. Zhukov Borok originated on the old Minsk-Mir highway, which was part of a busy trade route from Western Europe to Moscow. There was a ferry crossing over the Neman River in this place, which made the village an important transport hub.

The stone witness of history

The main attraction of Zhukov Borok is a watermill built in 1911. This stone-brick building, preserved to this day, stands on the picturesque banks of the Neman River. The mill is not just a monument of industrial architecture of the early 20th century. This is a place that witnessed the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War.

In 1943, the Nazi invaders burned civilians in the surrounding villages in the mill building. Today, this is recalled by a memorial sign erected at the mill, as well as a memorial stone in honor of the victims. This is a place where history makes you stop and think about the price of peace.

The land of poets and philosophers

Zhukov Borok is the birthplace and haven of many outstanding personalities. The world-famous philosopher Solomon Maimon, who described these places in his autobiography, was born and spent his childhood here. Anton Petkevich (known under the pseudonym Adam Plough) lived in the village, who was inspired by this place to create the poem "Zhukov Borok". The Belarusian-Polish poet Vladislav Syrokomlya lived and worked next door. It is no coincidence that a memorial stone to Belarusian philosophers and poets has been erected in the village, as well as commemorative plaques in honor of these famous personalities.

Today, the watermill in Zhukov Borok is a significant object for tourists traveling to Belarusian villages. Although it is impossible to get inside the building (the entrances are closed and the windows are barred), the place itself impresses with the atmosphere and panorama of the Neman River. The mill is located right on the riverbank, which allows you to combine a historical tour with a rest by the water.

Visiting this village, you will not just see an ancient building - you will touch the history, feel the spirit of the Neman region, so often praised by poets, and pay tribute to those who died during the war.
