Legends of the ancient monolith: secrets of the Devil's Stone (Kravets) near the village of Voronino

In the Vitebsk region, among the hilly landscapes of the Senno district, where silence is broken only by the rustle of foliage and the singing of birds, one of the most mysterious places in Belarus is hidden. Half an hour's walk west of the village of Voronino, on the banks of the Obolyanka River, lies the giant, the second largest boulder in the country, known as the Devil's Stone, or Kravets (Tailor).

This giant impresses the imagination with its scale. Imagine a block of stone measuring 10.2 meters long, 6 meters wide and about 4 meters high. The weight of this monolith reaches a staggering 340 tons. Scientists claim that the boulder, made of red-brown Rapakivi granite, was brought here about 17-20 thousand years ago during the Poozerye glaciation. Its homeland is far southwestern Finland, from where a powerful glacier, like a toy, brought him to the Belarusian land.

However, the locals, who had been observing the harsh beauty of the stone for centuries, could not be content with only stingy scientific facts. That's how the legends were born, shrouding the boulder in a mystical flair and giving it two names. Today it is not just a geological natural monument of national significance, but a real magnet for tourists, local historians and all seekers of Belarusian exotics.

The tailor's curse or the machinations of evil spirits?

The most intriguing thing about this boulder is its "human" name - Kravets (which means "tailor" in Belarusian). A touching and instructive legend is associated with him. They say that once upon a time there lived in these lands a skilled tailor, whose pride knew no bounds. He was so confident in his skills that he dared to work even on Easter Sunday. Such blasphemy could not go unpunished. According to one version, God turned him into stone to forever remind his descendants of the price of true faith and humility.

But there is another, more mystical version, which fixed the name "Devil's" for the boulder. According to this legend, the devil lived under the stone. And he was not a simple demon, but a hardworking tailor. For a small reward, the unclean sewed good clothes for the peasants. They say you can still see the prints of ancient coins on the stone - the price for his hellish skill. But everything comes to an end. One evil man decided to make fun of the devil: he brought him a piece of linen and asked him to sew "neither this nor that". The next morning, the customer found something incongruous on the stone: one sleeve was in the hem, the other was on the back, and the collar was missing altogether. The devil was offended by human ingratitude and treachery and left these places forever, ceasing to sew clothes.

The third legend takes us to the surrounding swamps. Supposedly, there were devils in the quagmire who liked to joke about drunken travelers. They lured drunkards to a huge boulder, and they, mistaking the cold stone for their own warm furnace, undressed and lay down to sleep on it. Waking up in the morning, the would-be travelers couldn't figure out how they got here, while the devils were laughing in the bushes.

A journey to the healing power of the stone.

Today, the Devil's Stone is a popular place for independent travel. It is not difficult to get to it: the village of Voronino is located 26 kilometers from the city of Senno and 87 kilometers from Vitebsk. Once at the boulder, you can not only touch the history that is tens of thousands of years old, but also feel that special, slightly harsh energy that always surrounds such sacred places. Many people believe that by sitting on a rock or leaning back against it, you can get rid of ailments and recharge with the power of the earth.

This is how scientific fact and folk fantasy intertwined, turning the Devil's Stone (Kravets) into a unique monument where the history of the Ice Age meets the world of Belarusian legends and legends.
