Waterfall on the Stracha River.

Natural site

Natural site

Grodno region, Ostrovetsky district, Bolshaya Stracha village

Description

The waterfall on the Stracha River is a unique place in Belarus, where the flat landscape suddenly acquires a mountainous character. It is located in the Ostrovets district near the village of Bolshaya Stracha, on the territory of the "Blue Lakes"2 Nature Reserve. The waterfall is man-made: it appeared on the site of an old mill dam. Two stone drains create a water drop of about four meters, especially impressive in spring during high water. The river is famous for its rebellious nature - there are rapids, boulders and steep banks up to 15 meters high. This is one of the few places in the country where you can hear the real sound of falling water and feel the power of the wild.

Pearl on the Stracha River

Belarus is a country of plains and calm rivers, but there are places where nature reveals its harsh and wayward nature. One of these places is the waterfall on the Stracha River, located in the Ostrovets district of the Grodno region near the village of Bolshaya Stracha. This is not just a picturesque corner, but a true legend among water tourism enthusiasts.

The obstinate nature of the Belarusian river.

Stracha is an amazing river. Its length is only 59 kilometers, but in this short segment it manages to cross three regions: Vitebsk, Minsk and Grodno. It starts from Lake Malye Shvakshty, and flows into Vilia, but most importantly, the Stracha never ceases to amaze throughout its journey.

Experienced tourists call it one of the most difficult rivers in Belarus. In summer, it shallows and becomes calm, and in spring it turns into a seething stream that requires real skill from travelers. The water rushes at speeds of up to 6-7 kilometers per hour, the riverbed is strewn with boulders and forest debris, and the steep banks rise to a height of 15-20 meters.

A waterfall born of a mill.

The waterfall on Stracha, like most Belarusian waterfalls, is of man-made origin. It arose on the site of an old mill dam near the village of Olshevo. Today, stone pillars and two drains with a water drop of about four meters have been preserved here, creating an impressive sight. The sound of falling water can be heard from afar, and in high water, especially desperate kayakers decide to jump over the waterfall.

The waterfall is located near the automobile bridge, which makes it easily accessible to the public. However, the main value of this place is not so much the waterfall itself as the unique natural complex of which it is a part.

Blue lakes and glacial canyons.

The section of the river in the waterfall area flows through the territory of the "Blue Lakes" Landscape Reserve, which is part of the Narochansky National Park. It was here that an ancient glacier once stopped, leaving behind deep canyons with steep slopes and a whole chain of picturesque lakes.

The shores of the Stracha in these places become steep in places, reaching a height of 15 meters. Old mighty trees lean over the water, creating additional obstacles for rafting. The river then shrinks into a narrow, bubbling stream, then spreads out among a swampy floodplain, then "boils" on rocky ridges.

The kingdom of wild nature.

The biological diversity in the Stracha valley is amazing. It is home to about 240 species of terrestrial vertebrates and more than 500 species of higher plants, of which more than 20 are listed as rare and protected. Grayling, brook trout, and chub are found in the crystal clear water - species that require high water quality.

Travelers rafting on the river tell of encounters with beavers leisurely crossing the river, with cranes during their "wedding" dances, with wild boars climbing steep banks, and even with owls silently flying up from under their feet. All this creates the feeling of a real wild forest, where a person is just a guest.

Legends and legends.

The locals keep the memory of the ancient legends associated with the Stracha. On the left bank of the river, not far from the Polotsk highway, there is the Oaks tract. According to legend, there lived a sorcerer-healer who cured people of diseases. One rich groom, having received healing, did not thank the healer. During the wedding, the healer reappeared and turned the greedy rich man and his guests into stones, as the legend says.

When to go and what to consider.

The most picturesque place is in spring, during the high water period, when the river is full and the most "extreme". At this time, fans of serious sports come here to test themselves in the fight against the obstinate nature of the river.

If you are not ready for a water trip, you can just come to the waterfall, admire the beauty of nature and relax under the sound of the water. The agro-town of Gervyaty, with one of the most beautiful catholic churches in Belarus, is 50 kilometers away. This is an excellent addition to the route.

It is important to remember that Stracha is a river that requires respect. You should not go rafting without experienced instructors and appropriate equipment. Rubble from fallen trees, underwater rocks and beaver dams make it dangerous for unprepared tourists.

Instead of a conclusion.

The waterfall on the Stracha is not just a point on the map. This is a place where you can feel the power and beauty of the Belarusian nature in its most expressive manifestation. There are no mountain peaks and thundering multi-meter waterfalls, but there is an amazing world of glacial landscapes, pristine lakes and a wayward river that does not obey anyone or anything. And that makes it truly unique.
