Vitebsk. Pedestrian street of Suvorov.

There are many interesting architectural monuments and museums, old streets and religious buildings in the historical center of Vitebsk. All tourists and guests of the city must visit the pedestrian street - this is Suvorov Street. This is the part of the city that has an ancient history, and there are many architectural monuments and memorable places on the street.

The street originates from the time of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was formed in the 14th and 15th centuries. At that time it was called Vzgorskaya, because at the very top, on a hill, there was a Vzgorsky castle.

During the Russian Empire, the street was called Officer's Street, and at the beginning of the 20th century, on the 100th anniversary of the death of the Russian commander A.V. Suvorov, it was called Suvorov Street. After the revolution, the street was named after the Soviet figure Vladimir Volodarsky. After the collapse of the USSR, the former name was returned.

Since 2010, the street has become pedestrian. Its length is 1300 meters. There was a post office and a telegraph office on the street. Many ancient buildings were destroyed during the war, and modern institutions and houses were built in their place.

In the 18th century, a stone town hall was built, which now houses the regional museum of local lore. A few years ago, the Resurrection Church was restored, which was demolished in Soviet times in 1936. The church was built in the 18th century in the late Vilna Baroque style.

On the street there are former shopping malls built before the revolution, apartment buildings and private mansions of the 18th and 19th centuries. The bookstore "Knizhny v Ratushe" is located in a 19th-century building. In recent years, several monuments have been erected on Suvorov Street, including Prince Algirdas and the tallest man in the world, Fyodor Makhnov, whose height was 285 centimeters. F. Makhnov was born in Vitebsk district.

There are several cafes and restaurants on the street. Souvenirs are on sale. In good weather, musicians perform outside, and craftsmen sell their wares.
