Vitebsk. Monument to Prince Algirdas.
In the center of Vitebsk, on the former market square opposite the Orthodox Resurrection Church, there is a monument to Prince Algirdas. Grand Duke of Lithuania Algirdas (1296-1377) - did a lot for the city of Vitebsk and for Belarus as a whole. The son of Prince Gediminas and the brother of Prince Keistut. During his reign, he significantly expanded the borders of the state. He married the daughter of the Vitebsk prince Maria, and after the death of the Vitebsk prince, the Vitebsk principality was inherited by Algirdas.
During the reign of Algirdas, numerous construction projects were carried out in Vitebsk, including powerful defensive structures. He was the founder of many temples. As a state leader, he led a successful foreign and domestic policy.
The monument to Algirdas was not erected immediately, but in several stages. The very idea of installing the monument arose back in 2010. A competition was held for the best version of the monument, which was won by sculptor Valery Moguchy. A pedestal for the monument was installed near the Resurrection Church in 2011, which, as a result, was empty for several years. Then the execution of the monument was entrusted to another sculptor, Sergei Bondarenko. And in 2014, in the month of June, during the celebration of the Day of the City of Vitebsk, a monument to Prince Algirdas was finally erected.
The monument depicts Prince Algirdas on a horse in army armor. The prince has his right arm outstretched, from which a falcon takes flight, as a symbol of princely power. The horse is walking at a gait. The sculpture is 3.6 meters high, and the height of the pedestal is 2.8 meters. The weight of the monument is 3.5 tons. The monument was cast at the Technolit enterprise in Polotsk.
